(TPT) – PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will enforce the yoga ban once the fatwa is gazetted by the government after it was approved by the Agong of Malaysia.

Malaysia Mufti, Datuk Mohd Tahrir Samsudin said the Agong has agreed to enforce the ban prohibiting Muslims from practicing yoga as yoga can deviate their Islamic faith. A recent academic study conducted by two renowned professors had discovered the possibly dangerous and debilitating consequences of yoga.

“Agong said this when the Malaysia Religious Committee of Malaysia chairman, Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman; the Malaysia Islamic Religious Council of Malaysia director, Datuk Zalil Baron and I sought an audience with the Sultan to explain the fatwa on yoga, recently,” he said in a statement, yesterday.

“This is done to protect the fragile minds of Muslims and Malays”

Mohd Tahrir said that in the National Fatwa Meeting held on 24 Oct 2008, it was said that yoga or Nastanja Suria Nama Sakar (Sanskrit language) means bowing before the sun using all eight parts of the body, which are two hands, two knees, two feet, chest and nose is proof that this is sinful before Allah, apart from words praising the sun. However, it is not known how this actually translates into a sin although the congregation of thousands of males and females in skimpy clothing appear to be the root of the fatwa.

Malaysia Yoga Federation up in arms

News of the fatwa reached the Malaysia Yoga Federation last week when director of the MYF, Muthuyoganathy Selvaraj had to assuage his followers that yoga was safe and would not lead to a life of sin. The MYF has membership of more than a million.

He explained that yoga which is also done to relief stress, resolve problems in life and find peace by achieving oneness with God is considered deviant only at a very high level of attainment. This is achievable only with the congregation of many followers at one go.

“I want to tell my followers that there are no problems at all with practising yoga. It is totally safe and good to follow” he explained.

Although reports of broken limbs and over-stretched muscles have started to surface since the fatwa came into being, Muthuyoganathy waved these away.

“Broken limbs are always expected in any vigorous exercise. This is to be expected. We do not have fragile minds at all” Muthuyoganathy explains while winking at this reporter.

Muthuyoganathy promised to convene a commission within the MYF to investigate any possible claims of fragile minds coming under attack during yoga practice session. Results would be released in time to come.
